Definitions of terms and phrases commonly used in ventilated and raised applications.

  • Sealant
    Elastic material having adhesive properties, used to form a continuous barrier preventing the passage of air, water, dust, etc. and to connect two elements, which may even move slightly, creating an expansion joint.
  • Section rod
    Element made of metal or of a plastic material and characterised by a cross-section that is smaller than its length. A metal or stiff plastic section is usually made in rods, while in the case of flexible materials it may be supplied in coils.
  • Service life
    Period of time following installation during which the building or its parts retain performance levels equal or superior to the acceptance limits.
  • Setting
    Hardening phase of a sealant.
  • Size of the panel declared by the manufacturer
    Size to which the tolerances are applied.
  • Skirting
    Additional element having the function of masking and protecting the joint around the edge of the modular raised floor , between the floor and the partitions and/or vertical closures.
  • Spontaneous life
    The spontaneous life of a component is the period of time for which the performance of the component remains within acceptable limits for its working requirements, under the influence of the stressing agents alone.
  • Stringer
    Horizontal component connecting the pedestals used to support the panels.
  • Stringer gasket
    Element having the function of creating a joint between a panel of the raised flooring and the horizontal supporting structure.
  • Structural bridge
    Load-bearing component used in raised floors to overcome situations that prevent the pedestals and the stringers (if used) from being placed in their normal positions.
  • Structural joint
    Expansion joint on the walkway surface in the presence of structural joints in the underlying floor slab.
  • Supporting surface
    Upper surface of an element of a floor slab (sill, screed, etc.) on which a modular raised floor may be installed.
  • System for curtain walling
    Collection of components from which it is possible to create a kit for curtain walling for subsequent installation on a building. It may give rise to several different kits.
