Definitions of terms and phrases commonly used in ventilated and raised applications.

  • Casing
    Element consisting of a frame and an infill slab, applied to an opening in a wall.
  • Cell or unit-type construction
    Interconnected pre-assembled modules having a height corresponding to one or more storeys, complete with infill panels.
  • Centreline
    The central axis of an element.
  • Component
    Part of a building, e.g. a wall, a floor or a roof, or a part of these elements.
  • Connecting joint
    Joint created when the upper surface of raised flooring has to interface with pre-existing or different floor coverings.
  • Curtain walling
    Cladding based on a metal structure for the façades of buildings, that is anchored to their load-bearing structure and can be classed as: total, in horizontal strips or in the form of vertical elements. Depending on the mounting system, curtain walling can be split up into three types: 1. structure made up of uprights and cross-members; 2. structure made up of uprights and frames; 3. structure based on a frame or cells. From the architectural point of view, curtain walling can be split up into: façades with a visible wire mesh or structural façades.
  • Curtain walling kit
    Set of components or prefabricated units that form curtain walling when installed on a building.
